Incorporating Hawaii Into Your At-Home Reception: Ryan & Joann

After their less than perfect Kauai wedding, Ryan and Joann enjoyed 16 days in Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island for their honeymoon. A few months later, the couple had an at-home reception for 110 of their friends and family, where they were able to share their Hawaii experience in a few special ways.

Joann and Ryan had guests write well wishes around one of their wedding pictures.

Honolulu Cookie Company favors

Lilikoi mango cookies from Honolulu Cookie Company provided table assignments and acted as favors. “I wanted people to feel like they were feeling a piece of Hawaii as they enjoyed the freshness of the unique taste.”

Hawaii table numbers

Ryan made custom table numbers using events and landmarks the couple visited during their 16 days in Hawaii.

Joann and Ryan used video to bring their wedding adventure together for everyone to enjoy. They purchased raw footage from the videographer who filmed their Kauai wedding and TruVision Studios compiled it into a beautiful story. Watch their wedding and honeymoon adventures here:

When a bride and groom are this gorgeous, adorably in love, and as creatively talented as these two (who happen to count wedding photography among their many talents), their wedding is destined to be a winner. Kit and Alison had a hand in all the design details of their “spiritual, Jewish Hawaiian wedding” and chose the Balinese-themed Moloa’a Shangri-La Estate on Kauai as the perfect setting to start their lives together. Scroll on to see the sweet images from Keith Ketchum Photography.

From the Groom, Kit: Being in a chuppah with the antique fabrics, local flowers and crystals that captured light and movement. My personal favorite was the tradition of the bride circling the groom 7 times.

Me and my wife designed our own wedding elements: from our sweet table to welcome table and custom table numbers to guest book with vintage Hawaiian post cards and more. We also did the design and art for all the signs you will see in Keith’s photos. We made the hashtag #furdererkauaiwedding for all our friends and family… we had a sign that told them to tag all the photos they took and posted on instagram and facebook. We also created a ustream live wedding feed on our wedding website and passed around a special iphone dedicated to filming the wedding for our friends and family that could not make it to the island. We then put it on our custom wedding website that I created to rsvp, gift registry and watch the wedding live.

I also did all the video myself for the wedding. I setup my own gopro in the wedding arches and my professional camera for down the aisle shots. I edited it myself and recently posted it for my family. It was definitely challenging shooting and being in the wedding. I was able to capture all the divine spiritual moments and put them together in a creative way, despite not being able to pan or change angles. We also personally designed the save the date, wedding invitation and rsvp. Alot of friends also came together and helped cook, setup and perform at our wedding.

Start early and delegate task to the professionals. Do your research, you typically get what you pay for. Start working together early and base the wedding off your own personal custom ideas. If you are planning the wedding yourself or making any of your own projects. It is important to work together with your partner and be open to the creative process and any changes that may happen. Your wedding will most likely be the most important day of your life so remember to have fun, don’t stress out and realize that no matter what happens it is perfection. Be open, communicate and enjoy the moment.

"Disney once said, “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.” When we first visited our venue, Sunset Ranch in Haleiwa, Oahu, we felt like we were floating in the sky. Looking down at the beautiful and grand ocean, we thought why not make our wedding far from reality. And have our guests enjoy the fairytale setting in paradise!"

A funny moment that I’ll always remember:

My brother (groomsman) and his family arrived 10mins before the first look event, because of his flight delay from Japan. When he arrived, the entire bridal party of 10 started stripping his clothes off down to his boxers to change into his groomsman outfit. He was completely dressed and primped in a matter of 5mins. That’s when we realized once again, how lucky we are to have great people in our lives who love and support us.

Oftentimes, I’ve seen Disney-themed weddings that are over-the-top and look more like theater productions than weddings. I adore how Rie and Takuya chose to create a dreamy fairytale feeling rather than duplicate a movie.

Case in point: The colors of these pretty chiffon bridesmaids dresses remind me of Disney princess shades but at the same time, don’t feel at all costume-y or forced.

“I grew up on Oahu from age 5, when our family moved from Tokyo, Japan. And moved to different states thereafter. When I thought to myself, which place I would feel as my true self, it was Hawaii. My husband’s dream on the other hand, was to take a vacation with his family who has never been outside of Japan. Our dreams met at a cross point and since our guests live in 5 different countries. Why not pick a meeting point in the most enchanted island in the world.”

The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day: Marcos & Maraliz

According to an American Express survey, at least 6 million people plan or expect a proposal on February 14th, making it very hard to claim the title of “The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day.” I think Marcos and Pacific Dream Photography were able to pull it off by building up the anticipation and combining three things that always make me cry – a military reunion, engagement, and, of course, a beautiful wedding.

The Most Romantic Valentine's Day: Marcos & Maraliz | Pacific Dream Photography | Hawaii Wedding Love

Marcos is an Information Technology Specialist in the U.S. Army and is stationed here in Hawaii, while his lady love Maraliz attends law school back home in Puerto Rico. The couple saved money so Maraliz could come for a visit, and Marcos secretly started planning a proposal and Valentine’s Day wedding.

Since Marcos knew their family wouldn’t be present, it was very important for those special moments to be captured. He contacted Pacific Dream Photography to inquire about photography services for their wedding, but having paid for Maraliz’s ring and airfare, funds were already tight. When Pacific Dream Photography heard their love story, they were moved to do something special and not only offered their services free of charge, but helped plan the proposal.

Maraliz arrived in Honolulu on February 12th and Pacific Dream Photography was there to film her arrival. Marcos planned to propose the next day and told Maraliz that they were going to a photo session, so she wouldn’t be suspicious about the cameras. The JW Marriott Ihilani Ko Olina also loved the couple’s story and set the mood by providing 5-star service complete with champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. Right before the proposal, they watched a video that Marcos had made of greetings and support from Maraliz’s family.

Then, Marcos got down on his knees…

…and Maraliz happily accepted his proposal.

The very next day was Valentine’s Day and the couple celebrated by becoming husband and wife with an intimate ceremony that included a Hawaiian blessing.

The Most Romantic Valentine's Day: Marcos & Maraliz

"When you find the person and you just see that, that is the person with who you want to share the rest of your life, it’s more than a ceremony, it’s more than a dress, it’s more than the maid of honor – it’s a dream come true."

— Bride Maraliz

Marcos will be here for a couple more years. Maraliz graduates from law school in June and will move here to be with Marcos once she graduates. Congratulations you two! We hope the rest of your life is just as enchanting your wedding story.
