I have a horrible habit that I need to break. Every morning, instead of getting out of bed as soon as I wake up, I reach for my phone and start scrolling through Facebook. Most of the time, this routine waste lots of valuable minutes but, once in a while, I’ll stumble upon something great.

Of course, I’m intrigued by anything that talks about weddings, babies, or animals. So naturally, this post caught my eye…

I totally support being eco-conscious and trying to save money on your wedding day, but Tray and Naomi are choosing to have a “recycled wedding” so they can use the money they’ve saved to help others recover from the devastation of Super Typhoon Haiyan (aka Typhoon Yolanda), the deadliest typhoon ever recorded in the Philippines.

Naomi, a Maui native, spent a couple years in the Philippines, mostly in the city of Tacloban, which bore the brunt of the November 2013 storm.

When the couple got engaged in January 2014, they excitedly started wedding planning but could not get their minds off the hardships that the people in the Philippines were facing. Many of their Filipino friends had lost loved ones and become homeless.

"In light of our prayers for the most basic human needs, even a relatively inexpensive $270-wedding dress seemed unnecessarily extravagant. It became obvious to us that the money that would be spent on our behalf could instead be invested to providing long-term solutions for deep physical and spiritual needs half a world away."
