After choosing to get a vehicle over having a Quinceañera, Martha dreamed of having a festive wedding that would live up to the fun family parties she remembers growing up. When she moved to Maui and later became engaged to local boy Christian, Martha was finally able to plan their “Amor a La Mexicana” wedding, complete with a few Hawaiian touches to honor Christian’s heritage.

Finding the perfect venue that would seem like a little piece of Mexico on the island of Maui was key to the wedding vision. The couple originally wanted to have their celebration at Old Maui High as the arches and rustic architecture embodied the imagery they desired, but realized that it wasn’t set up as a wedding venue and chose to do their First Look photos there instead.

Martha and Christian attended a party at Piiholo Ranch and saw that the rolling hills with grazing horses would be a fitting backdrop for a Mexican-inspired fiesta. In addition, the Operations Manager at the ranch had lived in Mexico and was truly able to understand what the bride wanted, which really helped the couple decide to be the first wedding ever to be held at Piiholo Ranch.

From Bride Martha: “A year before the wedding date, my good friend Lupe began one of our biggest DIY projects for the wedding. The plan was to grow hundreds of succulents to later plant in boxes for the centerpieces. Almost every weekend before the wedding we shopped and gardened to grow all the succulents we needed. Four months before the wedding we built 25 garden boxes, 24 inches long by 3 inches wide and 3 inches high. That same summer, Lupe traveled to Mexico for a family trip from which she brought me back yards upon yards of gorgeous Mexican lace that was to trim the boxes.

We also made 5 giant Pinatas. Lupe’s daughters helped me paper mache 5 giant beachballs that later would be covered in hundreds of tissue paper roses. There were four 24 inch beach balls and one 36 inch beachball. The smaller four (although rather large when made) were relatively easy to make. The largest pinata (at 5 foot span when completed) was the most challenging project to be done for the wedding. After two major fails with paper maching the big pinata, Lupe’s husband resuscitated the pinata by harnessing it during the drying process. Paper maching was one of various steps to this project. The most repetitive task was without a doubt rolIing and forming tissue roses. I have to give my husband major props for helping make pinatas. Most of the roses that were to be adhered to the Pinata were made by his huge hands. He spent countless hours making over 1000 white, blue and teal tissue roses. After about 2 months of this, the pinatas were finally complete just in time for the wedding.

Hand made rustic signs were another project that I embarked on. Luckily, I had an awesome bridesmaid that was on island and loved to work with wood and paint. We spent a weekend close to the wedding day sanding and painting pieces of old pallets that were to become bright and beautiful signs.

On one of my parent’s trip to Mexico, they picked up white papel picado flags that had our names on it. This was to inspire our invitations for the wedding. The original concept of my invitations was the white papel picado flags draped against an elegant cobalt blue background plus a RSVP postcard with the same theme. The concept quickly evolved with help of my graphic designer friend and my arts and crafts guru friend. The final invitation consisted of the original card placed within an embossed craft card that had a scalloped edged pocket on the left side of the card for the RSVP mini postcard. This invitation would later be tucked inside an ivory laced envelope sealed with a cobalt wax stamp which would be slipped into a clear cellophane envelope for delivery.”

“As much as I love Pinterest, the wedding made me realize that it’s a great tool to find inspiration however, to hold it as a standard can create unrealistic expectations.”
